I'm a huge supporter and advocate for rescue and shelter organizations. Why? I work closely with many of them in the Detroit metro area and there's an endless influx of dogs into shelters. ENDLESS.
- There are approximately 14,000 animal shelters and rescue organizations in the United States. Almost 7 million animals a year enter into those organizations.
- Animal shelter statistics indicate that there are more than 70 MILLION stray animals on the streets in the US at any given time.
- According to the Humane Society statistics, about 25% of dogs that enter shelters are purebred. That's roughly 800,000 dogs a year
- The main reason for euthanasia in shelters in overpopulation.
- Approximately 250,000 animals a year are victims of animal hoarding.
- Only 1 in 600 pit bulls are adopted out. They are the hardest breed to find a home for, and almost 75% of pit bulls that enter shelters are euthanized.
- There are roughly 10,000 puppy mills (mass breeding facilities) in the US. More than 70% are illegal operations.
